A generation ago, the case for computer access in schools could be framed as a nice-to-have — a useful supplement to a good education, but not the thing that determined whether a child received one. That case has essentially collapsed. Today, in most parts of the world, a child without regular access to a computer is a child working at a structural disadvantage, whatever the quality of their teacher or the strength of their ambition. Coursework increasingly assumes digital access. Research skills are taught, and expected, online. And the employment market a student eventually enters treats basic digital fluency not as a bonus skill but as a baseline requirement. This is the gap our educational technology programme in India exists to narrow.
Why computer access is an education issue, not a technology one
It's tempting to think of "getting children computers" as an infrastructure project, something adjacent to education rather than part of it. In practice, the two are inseparable. A child who has never used a keyboard, never searched for a source, never typed and revised their own work, arrives at further study or a first job already behind peers for whom those actions are second nature. That head start compounds. It shapes confidence, it shapes which subjects and careers feel accessible, and it shapes how ready a young person is for a workplace that now assumes digital competence as a matter of course.
The children most exposed to this gap are, almost by definition, the ones least able to close it on their own. A household without a computer is rarely a household with money to spare for one. So the disadvantage is doubled: the children who would benefit most from digital access are the least likely to have it at home, and often attend schools with the least capacity to provide it either. Left alone, that dynamic doesn't narrow with time — it hardens.
Why we chose this as one of our education partnerships
New Capital Link Foundation organises its work around a small number of focus areas — homelessness, education and access, and community development — and within education, we look for interventions that address a genuine, well-understood barrier rather than ones that simply sound good in a report. Access to a working computer meets that test. It isn't a soft or symbolic form of support; it's a specific, physical constraint on a child's education, and one that a targeted intervention can actually remove. That is precisely the kind of gap we look to fund: narrow enough to address properly, consequential enough to matter.
It also sits comfortably alongside the rest of our education work. We've written elsewhere about educational access as a route out of poverty more broadly, and the logic there applies just as directly here. Poverty rarely denies a child ability or effort. It denies them the ordinary tools that other children take for granted — and a computer, in a modern curriculum, has become exactly that kind of ordinary tool.
The same principle we apply everywhere else
We've made a point of favouring practical, targeted giving over broad, undirected contributions, and this programme is a straightforward extension of that principle into education. We could, in theory, support digital learning in the abstract — funding awareness campaigns, general advocacy, or a diffuse pool of small grants. We choose instead to put resources behind the concrete thing that closes the gap: computers, in the hands of children who don't currently have them, so they can do the coursework, the research and the practice that a modern education now requires. It's the same instinct that led us to respond to a specific winter crisis with sleeping bags rated for extreme cold, rather than a general seasonal appeal. The form of the intervention changes with the need; the underlying discipline — find the specific barrier, remove it directly — does not.
We're deliberately cautious here about overstating scale or specifics. This programme is one part of a wider set of education and access partnerships, delivered in India with local partners who understand the context far better than a foundation based in Essex ever could. What we can say with confidence is the principle behind our involvement: digital literacy is no longer a peripheral skill, and a child's education shouldn't be constrained by something as fixable as the absence of a computer.
What we look for as the programme continues
As with every partnership we back, our interest doesn't end once equipment is delivered. We look for evidence that access translates into actual use — that computers are integrated into how children learn, rather than sitting unused for want of training, maintenance or ongoing support. That's where our sector background helps: understanding how to make an investment durable, not just deliverable. The value of a computer isn't in the day it arrives; it's in every lesson it supports afterwards.
Closing a digital divide isn't a single, dramatic act. It's a slow correction of an unfair starting position, one child and one classroom at a time. That's a quieter story than a launch event, but it's the kind of work we think is worth doing properly.
